Observation on class 7b

January 22, 2019, was the first time I met my cooperating teacher, Pak Riefki. After discussing my schedule, he asked me to observe his class, Kelas 7B and Kelas 7E. By 10:00 AM, we went to the 7B classroom. As we enter the room, I observed that Indonesian Students were very polite because they asked for Pak Riefki's hand and put it on their forehead, nose, and cheeks as we enter the room. Some students also asked for my hand even though they still don't know me. By making that kind gesture, only shows that Indonesians were very respectful people.

Today is my first time observing Indonesia's class setting. The Indonesian classroom setting is almost the same in the Philippines. It is more on students' engagement in the lesson. As I have observed, students are listening to their teacher participating in the classroom recitation. They are not talking to their seatmates about non-classroom-related topics. They are disciplined. They have no choice but to listen to their teachers because they have to surrender their phones to the admin's office before they enter their classrooms. They can only use their phone if there's an important call or by the end of school time.

I learned a lot today. I'm sure these learnings would help me once I conduct my lesson in a few days. It is fascinating for me to experience something new.

Observation on class 7E

teaching in class

Before Pak Riefki conducts the lesson, he focuses on the classroom environment. He makes sure that the classroom is clean. He also erased the writings on the board.

At the beginning of the class, he asks his students about their past lessons and then clarifies them. Pak Riefki also asks his students if they did some advanced reading. After making sure that the students are now ready for today's lesson. Pak Riefki prepares his materials. He used PowerPoint as his instructional material. He also shows his students a video regarding the lesson.

After the discussion, he lets the students summarize the lesson. The students actively participate and share what they've learned in the lesson. After a few minutes, Pak Riefki gives his students a seat work, then lets them prepare for their next class.

I observe every minute of the class. Even only a few minutes were remaining before their class ends. Pak Riefki did not leave the classroom to ensure that his student will not do any unnecessary things during his class time.

Planning for teaching
Preparing lessons and materials

Based on my observation, some procedures are just the same in the Philippines. Before I started my lesson, I asked my CT if it would combine some Philippines' strategies. Luckily, he agreed that it'd be more fun because his students will experience different teaching strategies. As an introduction to my lesson, I'll prepare some Bahasa greetings and a brief introduction about myself and my country, the Philippines. I gathered a lot of audiovisual materials and tried to learn basic Bahasa words to deliver my lesson.

measurement and evaluation

Pak Riefki used paper and pencil assessment. He preferred to use Essay as his assessment tool because it'll enhance his students' thinking skills.

He also used Kahoot, a technological type of assessment where the students will conduct their quiz using their phones. It's my first time encountering this type of evaluation, and I noticed that it is enjoyable. I enjoyed this type of assessment, and I plan to use this when I continue my practice teaching in the Philippines.
