"DIVERSITY IS NOT A BARRIER ON TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS."

My  teaching Experience

Procedure of teaching

It was before 7:00 in the morning when I went to SMP Lab School UPI. Supposedly my class should start at 7 A.M, but because they have a tradition that each student must spend 20 minutes reading Qur’an and singing their national anthem, I kindly observed them and waited patiently. It is also a sign of my respect for them and their tradition.

After that, Pak Riefki (My Cooperating Teacher) introduced me to the class (Grade 7 C). I also introduced myself to the class, as I have observed the students looked very excited and happy to meet me and our lesson for today.

SELAMAT PAGI!

After I introduced myself, I showed them a video from the Philippines entitled “Magexercise tayo tuwing umaga” by Yoyoy Villame. I had noticed that the students got excited when they heard the music. Their body just followed the music because it is energizing. Besides, some of them laughed because the music is funny.

In the lesson proper, I used many Audio Visual Strategies so my students should be able to understand the lesson. Luckily based on my observation, my students could grasp the lesson Every time I show them a photo or a video, I give them a follow-up question, and I’m so happy that they are so active in answering my questions.

At the end of our class, I gave my students a review of our lesson, and I am so grateful because they got a high score on my task.

Classroom Management

I have different classroom rules in every class I handled at SMP lab school UPI. Before I start my lesson, I always make sure that my students are ready to listen. So that there will be no distractions once I began my lesson.

I remember the schedule of Class 7D. Every Monday, their schedule has a break. (11.40-12.00 and 1.00-1,20). Before break time, We will do the discussion and activities. Then After the break, we will continue other activities and assessments. I remember back then that some of my students were still not ready for our class. I observed that some of them are still not wearing their shoes. Some boys were also still not wear their outer uniform (vest). There’s a lot of musical instruments that are still not in their proper place. In short, the classroom is very messy. Since they are all grade 7, some students are still playful. Before I start the activity, I gave my students ample time to fix themselves and keep those unnecessary things that will distract our class.

Another part of my classroom management is that I always tell my students to raise their hands if they have questions, ideas, and concerns. The majority of my students are active. It shows me that they could follow the lesson.

Based on my observation, some of my students are a bit shy when sharing their ideas. Some of them whisper their answers to themselves because they feel shy to share their opinions with the class. So as a teacher, I always encourage them to share their ideas. Despite these instances, I always encourage them to give heed to our lesson.

For example, “Jahra, can you give me your idea about the Production, don’t be shy because there is no wrong idea.”

By this, my students got motivated and can now share their ideas. For me, it is a real pleasure because they participated in my art of questioning. Sharing their opinion in the lesson can also increase their thinking skills.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

Most of my class starts at 7 AM, but the lesson proper does not start at exactly 7 AM because the students spend their 20 - 30 minutes Reading Qur’an and textbooks, praying, and singing their national anthem. As a result, my teaching time diminished, and my lessons are very long and suitable for 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I need to fit the lesson into the remaining time. One thing that helped me in time management is my students being active in the class. They can quickly get my point, and a majority of them can understand English. That’s why I don’t need to repeat my examples and easily cope with some teaching strategies I showed.

These are the time allotment of our lesson:

3 minutes for teacher and student preparation

7 minutes for the 1st activity

15 minutes discussion

5 minutes for the follow-up questions

10 minutes for the 2nd activity

10 minutes for the assessment

When it comes to their task and activities, I always tell my students to raise their hands if they have questions. Sometimes I walk around the room so that I can monitor my students on their tasks.

Problem Solving

Not all of my students can understand English, so for them to understand the topic, I always bring my groceries supplies such as cookies, noodles, beverages, and even my things (since our topic is all about Production-Distribution- Consumption).  Through those tangible materials, they can understand the lesson. I also use hand gestures and non-verbal communication. I prepared a lot of audiovisual strategies that have a Bahasa subtitle. I even translate some sub-topic and examples into Bahasa and put them on my PowerPoint presentation. In those kinds of methods I made, I can ensure that all of my students can follow the lesson, not only those who understand English.
