My  teaching Experience

Classroom Management:

I have different rules in every class at SMP labschool UPI. Before I start my lesson I always make sure that my students are ready. I always check if they are already done with their own businesses, this is to ensure that there will be no distractions once I started my lesson.

I remember my class on 7D because every Monday their schedule has a break, I’ll just finish my lesson proper on the first period and on the second period we will continue their activity. I remember back then that some of my students were still not ready for our class. I observed that some of them are still not wearing their shoes. Some boys also did not wear their outer uniform (vest). There’s a lot of musical instruments that is still not on its proper place, in short the classroom is very messy.  So before I start the activity that I have prepared for them, I gave my students an ample time for them to fix themselves and to keep those things that are not related in our class.

In addition, another part of my classroom management is that I always ask my students to raise their hand if they have questions, ideas and concerns. Majority of my students are active, that is why it is an advantage for me because it only showed that they learned a lot of things from me. Since they are all grade 7, there are some students who are still playful, some are not really interested about the topic. Despite these instances, I still encourage them to give heed to our lesson.

Based on my observation, some of my students are a bit shy when it comes on sharing their ideas. Some of them just whispers their answers to themselves because they don’t have the courage to share it to the whole class. So as a teacher, I always encourage these students of mine to share their ideas.

“Can you give me your idea about the Production, don’t be shy because there is no wrong idea”

As I’ve said these statements, my students got motivated and is now able to share their ideas. For me, it is a real pleasure because they participated in my art of questioning. In addition, their critical thinking skills was enhanced.

Time Management and Organizing Activities:

Most of my class starts at 7 AM, but the lesson proper do not start at exactly 7 AM because the students spend their 20- 30 minutes in Reading Qur’an and textbooks, praying and singing their national anthem. As a result, my time in teaching diminished and my 7AM lessons are very long and actually good for 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I have to be alarmed on the time I need to fit my activity, lesson, task for 1 hour. I always fit on my mind that my students need to learn and we have to finish our lesson in just one hour. The good thing about this is my students are active learners, they can easily got my point and majority of them can understand English that’s why I don’t need to repeat my examples, and luckily our lesson fit on one hour, also because they can easily cope up with some teaching strategies I showed.

When it comes to their task and activities I always tell my students to raise their hands if they have questions. Sometimes I walk around the room so that I can monitor my students on their tasks.

There’s also a time that we have finished our class early, in order to keep my students quiet, and class to be organized, I just decided to answer some questions on their activity, and the students shares their answer how the answer my situational activities. As I checked my students activities, I am happy that majority of them got high score.

Problem Solving:

Not all of my students can understand English so in order for them to understand the topic, I always bring my groceries supplies such as cookies, noodles, beverage and even my personal things (since our topic is all about Production-Distribution- Consumption) so that they can understand the lesson, I also use hand gestures, and non-verbal communication. I prepared lot of audiovisual strategies, also those video has a Bahasa subtitle. I even translate some sub topic and example into Bahasa all of my students will learn not only those who understand English.
